Cervical cancer is caused by high-risk types of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Shannon Miller, the most decorated American gymnast in history with 7 Olympic medals and 9 World medals, sat down with Gretchen to talk about the importance of asking your doctor for the HPV test along with your annual PAP test. Seventy-five to eighty percent of all women will contract the HPV virus at some time in their lives. If their body is unable to fight off the virus, HPV can cause normal cells on the cervix to become abnormal and slowly develop into a cancer. Shannon’s passion for women’s health and wellness has led her to support the Pearl of Wisdom Campaign to stop Cervical Cancer and urge women to spread the message that through testing and immunization, this form of cancer is preventable.
